In the Arena of Faith and Sport: FCA in Broward & Miami-Dade

When most people think of athletics, they picture speed, strength, and scoreboards. But there’s a deeper game being played—the shaping of character, the forging of values, the transformation of lives. That’s where the Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) comes in, and in South Florida, its presence in Broward and Miami-Dade counties is especially strong.

Since 1954, FCA has lived out its vision: to see the world impacted for Jesus Christ through the influence of coaches and athletes. It does this through four core values—Integrity, Serving, Teamwork, and Excellence—and a clear model: Engage people, Equip them with tools for spiritual and leadership growth, and Empower them to influence others.

Sports are more than games. They’re platforms for influence. And FCA harnesses that influence for eternal impact.

In Broward, FCA has become a powerful local hub. Through weekly “huddles”—small groups where athletes and coaches gather for prayer, mentorship, and encouragement—FCA touches over 1,200 students every week. Just last year, more than 700 coaches and athletes in the county made decisions for Christ. That’s not just activity—it’s transformation.

One standout initiative is FCA Broward Lacrosse, built on the principle of “Player Over Program.” Since its launch in 2017, it has grown into a multi-level boys’ and girls’ program where wins and losses matter less than faith, growth, and character. Here, athletes aren’t just competing—they’re being mentored for life.

FCA’s presence in Broward public schools normalizes faith-centered conversations on campus. By giving student-athletes a safe, encouraging space, FCA helps shape identity in one of the most formative settings: school.

Based in Cutler Bay, FCA South Miami-Dade mirrors the national mission while tailoring ministry to the unique culture of Miami. Their outreach reflects the area’s diversity—meeting athletes and coaches where they are, in their language and their community.

FCA also thrives at the collegiate level.

  • University of Miami FCA emphasizes its Engage-Equip-Empower model among Hurricanes athletes and coaches.

  • FIU FCA builds relationships through student affairs and multi-faith programs, equipping future leaders on and off the field.

College ministries like these form leaders who will influence the next generation of athletes—whether in professional sports, coaching, or community leadership.

However, ministry in South Florida isn’t without hurdles:

  • Sustainability: High cost of living makes it tough to retain staff and volunteers.

  • Cultural Relevance: Balancing faith integrity with cultural diversity is a constant tension.

  • School Access: Some campuses are harder to reach, especially in underserved areas.

  • Measuring Impact: Wins are easy to track; spiritual growth is harder to quantify.

  • Partnerships: Collaboration with churches, leagues, and community groups is vital to multiplying reach.

Looking ahead, FCA in Broward and Miami-Dade has opportunities to innovate:

  • Game-Day Devotionals before kickoff, open to families and fans.

  • Coach Mentorship Tracks to raise up faith-driven leaders.

  • Cross-Sport Huddles to unify athletes across disciplines.

  • Bilingual Ministries (Spanish and Creole) to connect more deeply in Miami’s diverse neighborhoods.

  • Community Impact Events blending sports clinics, service, and gospel outreach.

In South Florida, FCA is more than a ministry. It’s a movement—one that shows the scoreboard isn’t the only measure of success. By investing in coaches and athletes, FCA is shaping leaders, families, and communities for generations to come.
